India Agri Export Outlook 2026: What Importers Should Watch

India's import and export environment in May 2026 is active, but serious buyers should look beyond headline growth. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported that India's total merchandise and services exports for April 2026 were estimated at US$80.80 billion, compared with US$71.13 billion in April 2025. Merchandise exports were reported at US$43.56 billion, while merchandise imports were US$71.94 billion.

For agricultural importers, the practical message is not only that India remains a large sourcing market. The real takeaway is that product-level clarity, packaging discussions, documentation planning, and destination-country compliance need to be handled before price comparison.

APEDA's 2026 updates have highlighted India's diverse agricultural and processed food export basket, including Basmati rice, non-Basmati rice, organic products, plant-based products, fruits, pulses, vegetables, and region-specific produce. APEDA also noted work on packaging design solutions and technical standards for selected GI and regional products, which matters for shelf life, transit protection, and retail presentation.

Buyers should treat this as a signal to make enquiries category-wise. A rice buyer may also evaluate millets, pulses, oil seeds, or selected processed agricultural products depending on destination demand and import rules.
